For the 100th day of school, the students were given the task of writing about themselves at age 100. At first, this seem to be a near impossible task for some - "Miss Procopio, I am not going to be alive when I am 100!" After explaining over and over again that this was a creative writing assignment requiring them to use their IMAGINATION, the students were able to come up with some impressive thoughts. Some described themselves as wearing comfortable clothes, no high heels, and having a big belly. Many said they would be living in a mansion and spoiling their grandchildren. Helping the poor, worshiping God, and assisting the disabled were other answers. Of course some did not give up their dreams of fame - moving to Brazil to pursue a soccer career, pursing a tennis career (they know how to score bonus points ;) ), and becoming a famous singer. What can I say? We have a talented bunch. This has been one of my favorite assignments so far. Stop by to see the writings hanging in the hallway.
Summarizing and Author's Purpose
This has been our focus in Language Arts for the last few weeks. With standardized testing right around the corner, it is important that the students grasp how to understand what they are reading. We have been learning how to summarize using the main idea and details. This week, we will focus on author's purpose. Why is the author writing? What is he trying to do? An acronym we have used to remember the different reasons for writing is PIE - persuade, inform, entertain. After determining the purpose for writing, it is easier for to identify the main idea of the text.
